The northernmost Seleukid mint at Istros

SELEUKID KINGS. Antiochos Hierax, circa 242-227 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 16.75 g, 12 h), Istros. Diademed head of Antiochos II to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ANTIOXOY Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding arrow in his right hand and resting his left on grounded bow; to inner left, ΙΣ; in exergue, uncertain letters. SC -, cf. 486.1 (differing controls). Extremely rare and of great historical interest. Light marks, otherwise, very fine.

For the attribution of the SC 496 series to Istros under Hierax, see Marinescu and Lorber, Black Sea Hoard, pp. 236-238. If this attribution is correct, it represents the northernmost Seleukid mint, located a full 400 km north of the Bosporus.
